Florida Boot Camp Guards Acquitted in Teen's Death

Unbelievable. The guards at the Florida boot camp have been acquitted in charges arising from the death of Martin Lee Anderson. (Background here and here.)

[A] video showed the boy was kicked and hit repeatedly by guards.....A second autopsy found the boy died of suffocation because his mouth was blocked and he was forced to inhale ammonia smelling salts, which resulted in a blockage of his airway. The medical examiner said he died as a result of the "actions of the guards."

Here's what's been happening at teen boot camps.

    Sh*t Rolls Downhill.

Obviously they took the instruction a-jury-of-their-peers completely litterally and chose a group of sadistic cowards.

Reportedly, the boys mother is rather distraught, but it's nothing that a few slams, punches and a face full of pepper spray wont take care of: reasonable use of force and all that..

Guards Acquitted in Boot Camp Case

I watched some of this trial, and I was not impressed with the testimony from the nurse or some of the guards.  The first autopsy was an obvious cover-up, and I think they used it to compete with the later autopsy that was performed by unbiased parties. I suppose this is how they achieved reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors. That first autopsy should never have been admitted as evidence.

[An initial autopsy by Dr. Charles Siebert, the medical examiner for Bay County, found Anderson died of natural causes from sickle cell trait. A second autopsy was ordered and another doctor concluded that the guards suffocated Anderson through their repeated use of ammonia capsules and by covering his mouth.]

These guys admitted to holding this boy's mouth shut while they shove those ammonia things up his nose, assuming he was faking his collapse, and they had the video of them doing it.  They knew they were being videotaped at that point, you have to wonder what happened when they knew the camera wasn't on them.

["There was nothing to show that this was anything but a healthy, foul-mouthed, out-of-control, young man who was malingering out on that field," Jonathan Dingus, defense attorney for guard Henry McFadden, told jurors.]

      "foul-mouthed"

This is a code word in the South, and among the conservative minded, to describe someone who is obvious trash, and deserves whatever they get.

Of course it's just a coincidence, that an all-white jury acquitted a group of mostly white folks of killing a young black boy.  That's what they call Southern Justice people, and it's still going on here in the 21st-century.

["You kill a dog, you go to jail," said her lawyer, Benjamin Crump. "You kill a little black boy and nothing happens." He spoke outside court, which is across the street from the now-closed Bay County boot camp.]

[Chuck Hobbs II, an attorney for the Florida chapter of the NAACP, said his group was considering asking the Justice Department to bring federal civil-rights charges against the guards. Defense attorneys called such a case unlikely.]

Guards acquitted in Fla. boot camp death

["The Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney's Office will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence, including the state trial transcripts, and take appropriate action if the evidence indicates a prosecutable violation of federal criminal civil rights statutes," the Justice Department said in a statement. ]

It makes me sick reading about this stuff, what these closet sadists do to children.  One kid I read about died after vomiting up dirt he was eating because all they got to eat for months was an Apple for breakfast, a carrot for lunch, and a plate of beans for dinner, all while being put through Marine style basic training. Another kid here in Missouri died of an untreated spider bite.

The story said that they were acquitted of manslaughter.  Was a charge of criminally negligent homicide offered to the jury?
At least the family got millions and an admission of wrongdoing from Florida, which is more than the Goldman family got from OJ.
Maybe the jury got caught up in issues of intent; strange that there was an unanimous acquittal rather than a hung jury if the evidence and law were so obvious.  Though it happens (see OJ, above).

Get over it: he got off because he had a humongous nest egg, no other reason. I would think you guys on the Right would be comforted with the thought that it'll trickle down to all of us eventually (sic)

But, that is what has happened to LE today.  Unfortunately, the courts are still protecting the officers instead of the people.

boot camp acquittal of "nurse" (none / 0) (#8)
by mimi rn on Sat Oct 13, 2007 at 02:56:13 AM EST

I was sickened by the images of the boot camp inmate being the victim of the commonly used 'show of force'.  The guards took it upon themselves to continue with camp protocol regardless of the obvious condition of the non-combative young person. This kid might have been a 14 caret jerk. But folks, this case is not about race.  It is mostly about the nurse who watched and did nothing to intervene.  Nurses are care-givers. They observe the conditions of those on their watch, under their care, and intervene as needed.  Schmidt watched. She passed judgment on the character of this boy and forgot he was her patient. I'm trusting the state will revoke her license. She is a disgrace to all nurses. I'm at once ashamed and incensed.

Florida Gards Not Guilty (none / 0) (#11)
by dbldiamnds on Sat Oct 20, 2007 at 05:52:06 PM EST
This case is truly a misjustice for the family of the juvenile. The gards did use misconduct and it was seen on camara. There is no way that what these gards have done is justifiable. I am in the field and believe me this is against all ethics in the feild. It truly unbelievable that the jury found them not guilty. As some one stated above Southern Justice. I live in Cenral Florida and I am originally from New York and I have never seen such racist bull ###t as I see down here. The fact that the kid was black and most of the gards were white probably good ole boys from some backyard country bumpkin town travlin to the big city to work is true. Thats what its like here. If you live in what they call a city down here you are city folk. The people that live in the subburbs are really racist. There is a town here that if you are not born and raised in it you better not even drive through it. Its insaene and crazy!!!!!!!!!!Those gards should have never got off and money doesnt replace what the family has lost.
