King Pardons Saudi Rape Victim, No Lashes

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has shown some mercy and granted a pardon to the victim of a gang rape who was sentenced to 200 lashes because she was in the company of a man other than her spouse at the time of the crime.

The rape took place a year and a half ago in Qatif, a small Shiite town in the Eastern Province, the center of Saudi Arabia’s oil industry. The woman, who has been publicly identified only as the “Qatif girl,” said she met a former boyfriend to retrieve a photograph of herself. They were sitting in a car when seven men attacked, raping them both.

As I wrote here, the original sentence of 90 lashes was upped to 200 lashes after her lawyer complained to the media. Back to today's news:

Commenting on the pardon, the Saudi justice minister, Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Sheik, told Al Jazirah that the king fully supported the verdicts against the woman but had decided to pardon her because it was in the “interests of the people.”

“On one hand this tells people, ‘We support our system and we will punish you if you violate it,’” he said. “Yet he’s also showing mercy. Throughout, he’s making it clear that he is not disagreeing with the judge’s opinion on this sensitive issue of sexual chastity, but he believes that there is a higher interest to be served by the pardon, whether that’s relationships between Shiites and Sunnis, or international opinion.”

Thank you King Abdullah.

At least he didn't invade another country an kill a million people to "liberate" them.

The pseudo-christian radical nutbars and their supporters like yourself are.
They've sent armies to kill thousands of times more innocent people than muslim radicals retaliating for pseudo-christian radical nutbars killing their children and women ever have.
But you knew that. It's an awful reality.

So you define christians as anyone who:
    a. agrees with you.
    b. won't defend themselves.
BTW - You still haven't answered the question as to why the Marines were in Lebanon in 1982.
As you know, they were there trying to separate the warring factions and establish peace. .....

Ah yes, those Little Eichmans... they deserved it, right??? (sarcasm alert)

must be nice to have a mind so totally uncluttered by anything resembling an intellect. i suspect it makes life so much simpler.

oh, wait, i think that's the first sign of the flu! never mind.

So...what about the 'other' rape victim...the former boyfriend?  I gather he wasn't sentenced to anything for being in the company of a woman not his relative...  So, what's the logic then?  If she had been in the company of her father or brother and the 7 had attacked and raped them both...then what?

We know what this is about, don't we?  Don't we?  Men controlling women...and that's all.

Christ.  And some folks think it doesn't matter at all whether a man or a woman runs the government of a country.  This story, as any woman can tell, is the reason why it can make a difference.  It doesn't always...but it can.

    Try googling. It won't cost you a penny. (none / 0) (#9)

In other words the king thought the sentences were just fine as is, but lowered them because of the international political heat.

That the guy could not bring himself to say the sentences were wrong says it all.

Yes. That is good.  Although these same bozos are funding the teaching of that ideology throughout the world.

To see more of that ideology at work google "Aqsa Parvez" for something closer to home.

Friends of the dead girl told journalists that Ms. Parvez's relationship with her father was antagonistic. He wanted her to wear a hijab. Instead, she wore the latest garish teen styles...

When my teen daughter gets out of line I threaten to give her a kiss on the forehead in public and she straightens right up.

he believes that there is a higher interest to be served by the pardon, whether that's relationships between Shiites and Sunnis
Were the attackers and victims from different sects?

Oh, wait a second, wasn't that what you were saying about immigrants, particularly about undocumented workers from Mexico.

Something you said about assimilation, and all cultures not being equal.

Some cultures are more unequal than others.  FWIW, I don't have a problem with those that want to leave the old country behind come here to become Americans.  As a matter of fact expanding NAFTA to include free trade and travel in labor would probably be a good thing.

OTOH, a culture that endorses beating or killing women that don't live in a sack is one we don't need, don't want, and should seek to extirpate where ever encountered.

If you get a majority of illegals in an area you will not have assimilation.

And all cultures are not equal. To think otherwise requires deep stupidity.

thanking the "king" for this pardon is akin to thanking the plantation owner for his tablescraps. Or thanking the rapist for wearing a rubber.  This ain't mercy, this is a cop-out...the "king" believes beating on girls is right and just, but doesn't have the balls to go through with it.  Where I'm from that makes you a piker.

He doesn't deserve thanks, he deserves a date with some pitchforks and torches.  I urge my Saudi friends who cherish love, freedom, and justice to make it so.  We can help too....stop buying their blood-soaked oil and enriching this pr*ck.
