Reactions To The Bhutto Assassination

President Bush:

"The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy," he said. "Those who committed this crime must be brought to justice."

From, Spencer Ackerman, Bhutto friend and advisor Husain Haqqani:

A longtime adviser and close friend of assassinated Pakistani ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto places blame for Bhutto's death squarely on the shoulders of U.S.-supported dictator Pervez Musharraf. . . . "There is only one possibility: the security establishment and Musharraf are complicit, either by negligence or design. That is the most important thing. She's not the first political leader killed, since Musharraf took power, by the security forces." Haqqani notes that Bhutto died of a gunshot wound to the neck. "It's like a hit, not a regular suicide bombing," he says. "It's quite clear that someone who considers himself Pakistan's Godfather has a very different attitude toward human life than you and I do."

Nawaz Sharif:

Pakistan Muslim League (N) chief Nawaz Sharif today described Benazir Bhutto's assassination as the most tragic incident in the history of Pakistan. . . ."We both were struggling for the same cause, and we had signed the charter of democracy," Sharif told a TV channel. . . . Sharif told Bhutto's supporters that he would fight "your war from now on", and that he shared the grief of "the entire nation".

I predict Musharraf will cancel the elections schedlued for 12 days from today.

...as is much of the world.  If not literally, then certainly in the metaphor of the soul.  And we are leading the world where?

    "Enemies of Democracy" (none / 0) (#2)

I just saw UK PM Gordon Brown saying the assassination was committed by "enemies of democracy" in Pakistan. WHICH enemies of democracy in Pakistan is the hard question. Bhutto advisor Husain Haqqani likely has it right or at least half right.

    DEMOCRACY DEAD IN PAKISTAN.
From a speech by Bhutto April 2007:

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
The fanatics who exploit the name of Islam do not speak for the Muslim people.
In this the twenty first century, the Muslim people search for freedoms that exist in other parts of the world. They search for a society that is representative and accountable and which they determine for themselves.
And as part of that search, I prepare to return to Pakistan, to support my country's movement for the restoration of democracy through the holding of fair, free and impartial elections.
The people of Pakistan closely followed Ukraine's movement for democracy. We gain inspiration from the Orange Revolution that took place.
And if elections in my country are rigged, we hope to emulate your orange revolution through public demonstrations and peoples power.
It is through democracy, diversity and pluralism that we can together build a world of interfaith understanding and tolerance, a world free from terrorism.
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and in the words of the Prophet of Islam,

     "Spread peace between yourselves"
