Jeb Bush Gets Snubbed for Honorary Degree

Florida Governor Jeb Bush won't be getting an honorary degree from the University of Florida. The Senate Faculty voted against it on Thursday.

Some faculty expressed concern about Bush's record in higher education.

"I really don't feel this is a person who has been a supporter of UF," Kathleen Price, associate dean of library and technology at the school's Levin College of Law, told The Gainesville Sun after the vote.

Other dealbreakers:

Bush's approval of three new medical schools during his tenure has diluted resources, Price told the newspaper.

Bush has also been criticized for his "One Florida" proposal, an initiative that ended race-based admissions programs at state universities.

Rejection is a rare phenomenon.

"It is unheard of that a faculty committee would look at candidates, make recommendations and then (those candidates) be overturned by the Senate."

    Whats In A Name? (5.00 / 1) (#2)

PPJ has a point.  Had Jeb's last name been Jones or Smith or Grabowski, it would have been ok to reject him but Jeb is not like ordinary men.  He is a Bush.  He is entitled to all the priveleges that come from being a member of the upper class. (sarcasm alert)

My take on this is a little different.  In the interest of laying out possible bias, I'm a FSU grad.

The idea that Jeb Bush did not do enough for UF is ridiculous.  For as long as I can remember UF has been first in line when it comes to getting its share of the gravy.  When UF is saying that the creation of other medical schools is diluting resources from UF what they are really saying is that UF should have the monopoly on medical schools.  Not giving Jeb an honarary degree because he didn't do enough for UF is like one spoiled brat rejecting another spoiled brat.

If I had my way, honorary degrees are right out of Oz.... But.....

When was the last Governor rejected??

It's BS, and just demonstrates how far partisan politcs have penetrated our universities.

This is great meat for O'Reilly.

Your deliberate misunderstanding is a characteristic well understood by the world around you.

All I said was that this would be meat for O'Reilly.

Please try to display, just a small bit, of ability to see the difference between a neutral comment and one supporting something.

Wrong again my friend.  Its not BS, its ThD.  The plan was to confer upon Jeb Bush the honorary degree of ThD.  That's Doctor of Thinkology (see Wizard of Oz).

by Molly Bloom on Sun Mar 25, 2007 at 09:52:58 AM EST
HAD his name not been Bush, would Armando Codina have made JEB a partner (of Codina Bush); would the federal regulators have cut a deal so the partnership, AFTER DEFAULTING, on a 4.5 million in 1989, loan only had to pay back 500K? If you or I had defaulted on 4.5 million, would we have been given such a sweetheart deal or are such perks only reserved for sons of presidents.

MJ has the story for those who are curious.

Since Jimbo is a monarchist, who believes the king can do no wrong I am sure he is ok with that.

A better answer would be a Dishonorable degree for Jeb. Great story from MJ, MB.

    Thanks for the link.

    Since Jimbo is a monarchist

You have become one of the Squeaky smear gang, so I believe it is time to remind us all, since you want to speak of ethics, of Squeaky's guidelines.

Posted by Squeaky at September 19, 2005 11:19 PM

Rove never needed proof for his smear machine, why should I.

    Now to answer your question.

Sounds to me very similar to what the esteemed Senator from Nevada and Demo Majority Leader cooked up." Which is to say that no wrong doing was found.

Of course if you want to speak of state level trading on your name,we have this.

Hillary Rodham Clinton was allowed to order 10 cattle futures contracts, normally a $12,000 investment, in her first commodity trade in 1978 although she had only $1,000 in her account at the time, according to trade records the White House released yesterday.

The new records also raise the possibility that some of her profits -- as much as $40,000 - came from larger trades ordered by someone else and then shifted to her account....

Now what any of that has to do with a university offcial getting in a snit and having a chance to show us all his great power, I don't know.

Turn out the light on the way out. The light is blinding you.

I am merely taking you at your word. Your position is always that congress has no oversight capability over Bush. That Bush has done nothing wrong. This position is traditionally known as "the King can do no wrong"  position. It comes from the proposition that the King is anointed by God. It is the basis of monarchial rule.

If you don't like me taking you at your word, I suggest you stopping making monarchial pronouncements. Your position  seems to be the position of Bush true believers, I might add. (whether or not you consider yourself a Bush true believer).

I have given this a lot of thought over the last 6 years and I am sick and tired of "more patriotic than thou" Bush leaguers trying to turn the clock back to pre 1776 government in the US, with "the Congress has no oversight capabilitiy/Bush can do no wrong position". I've have had it.

Nothing Bush or his supporters have done is more corresive to democracy than this. Not the graft, not the lying about WMD's not the assualt on the enviroment. I am not going to be silent any more. It it my patriotic duty to speak out against this anti-democratic, anti-American position, whenever I see it, whenever I hear it.

When Bob Barr and I are on the same page about anything, this country is seriously off track.

    I don't need enemies.

Please be so kind as to put your money where your mouth is and show me where I have said Congress has no over sight.

The problem is, this isn't oversight, but partisan politics. Heck, Boxer admitted this morning that the Demos had nothing.

They're just frothing at the mouth hoping there is something.

    You are a monarchist:

The point is that you have nothing on anyone

King Bush can do no wrong according to Jim.

As for HRC, your party (the GOP) was in charge of congress from 1994-2006. They could have investigated HRC at any time regarding the cattle futures. Why didn't they?

No one has ever shown she has did anything wrong there. A lot of smoke, but no fire. I remain open minded on the subject. Perhaps she did, perhaps she didn't. Wheres the evidence other than your fevered immagination.

The only degree any of the Bush boys should get is the third.  The list of crimes they have all commited would have resulted in prison terms for most people who don't have the name Bush.

This will get the anti-intellectuals of the sort who pay attention to O'Reilly up in arms.  "Why is Jeb being rejected by a bunch of SMART people?  What do smart people know that people who like Jeb Bush don't?"
