Biden Stops For Barbecue in Denver

This afternoon Vice President Joe Biden walked into M&D's, a local barbecue haunt in Denver, before speaking at a Middle Class Task Force at the Natural History Museum. He was a hit with the customers.

Tomorrow he gives the commencement address at the Air Force Academy.

I want to know where he was for dinner. The TL Kid and I were driving back from the Lowry area -- going west on Alameda -- around 6:00 pm. Around Quebec, he notices there are two cop cars parked on each side street. I suggest maybe it's "The Heat is on" D.U.I. campaign which relaunched this weekend. But we're in a boring, non-fancy, residential area. Would they be trying to get workers driving home after Happy Hour? Unlikely.

We get into a discussion about the legality of the program, which lasts another four or five blocks, to Monaco, and there's still either one or two cop cars parked on each side street. Definitely was not a D.U.I. campaign.

After another five blocks and more parked cop cars, we turned off Alameda onto Holly, and there was a single cop car parked. We debated stopping and asking the officer what was up, but neither one of us likes talking to police if we don't have to, so we skipped it. We finally decided either someone really important was in the area or there was a terror threat. But, it was a very bland area. No expensive homes, no restaurants. Just a nursing home, and there was only an mini-ambulance in front, no fancy cars. The only other things nearby were a Temple and a Mosque.

So, now I'm curious: Where did Joe stop for dinner? Was it part of Middle Class Task Force Day that he stop for dinner at some random middle class family's home?

Update: One possibility:
Also on Tuesday, Biden's wife will visit the Lowry campus of the Community College of Aurora. Jill Biden will tour the school's Simulated Emergency Medical Services Program facility and speak with college administrators, students and graduates, White House officials said Friday.

The visit is part of her work to highlight the Obama administration's commitment to the country's community colleges and their students.

According to TPM, Mrs Biden spoke at 3:30 pm. Still doesn't explain why so many cops were needed every block for a mile or more at 6:00 pm, but I'm getting closer.

...all this talk about food.  If it weren't for this awful migraine, I'd probably have a powerful hankerin' for some BBQ--or some good ol' Southern fried chicken!

Does the altitude in Denver make good BBQ more difficult?

    But maybe not the altitude.

Sorry Coloradans, but since moving south I have learned about good BBQ. Truly a revelation!

You have Florida beat on every other count though.

...eat bar-b-que at M&D's or Daddy's Bruce's or any of the other fine establishments in the greater Five Points area?

Just as good as any "southern" BBQ I've ever had.

    I did eat at M&Ds (none / 0) (#6)

and it was very good...it was a long time ago, so maybe my more recent experiences have surpassed it. Or maybe it is just that BBQ is more ubiquitous down here - easier to find the good stuff.

...you do have to be somewhat daring and a bit of a sleuth to find the good stuff here.  A lot of people here consider Brother's good BBQ, but it is owned by Brits--and what do they know about BBQ?!

    I didn't know it was owned by Brits (none / 0) (#8)

They opened one on Arapaho in the tech center when I used to work down there. It was decent enough - better than Dickey's anyway, which was close to where I worked also. Not as good as 5 points area place, but doable for lunch anyway!

is that no one plops cole slaw on your sandwich as the default serving method. Yuk - don't know where they came up with that - I first experienced it in Memphis.

I never had real BBQ till I got here.  I obviously never even really knew what BBQ was, just pseudoBBQ. But it's hard to find a decent steak down here as any sort of norm.  And I've never been to a buffet where every single item served was deep fried except for the field greens until I got here either :)  And I really still don't officially know what a field green is.  I just nod like I get it.

I was going to add that about the steaks (5.00 / 1) (#15)

they do not do steaks very well here either. I like the western steaks a whole lot better - more sizzling seasoned 'crust', or whatever you call the outside of a steak.

is it just my imagination, or does the South have a lot of lunch only places?  Good, hearty southern lunch - but you can't come back and get the same meal for dinner.  Something that struck me when I came from PA to NC.

We have Jada's and one other one downtown that are very good but I would be able to give them so much more business if they did evenings.  I really enjoy their food too because there isn't much that isn't a chain outside of them.  There was a third too that a granddaughter had created out of her grandmother's old house on Main Street Enterprise and it was so good because she colored outside of the southern lines and gourmeted it up.  It was so delicious, we ate their often but when you have a busy day it gets hard. Sadly the same tornado that destroyed our high school here and claimed the lives of some of the kids also completely demolished her grandma's house.  She caters now.....mostly weddings, and no more lunch for the unwashed masses  sniff........sniff

I'm glad I'm not crazy!  Yeah what drives me nuts about the lunch places is that I rarely go out for lunch except on the weekends.  And their food is just TOO GOOD.

thankfully the occurrences have gone down, but I can always tell when the "threat" has gone up by the cops at the subway in my 'hood. Don't need no color chart here!

Thankfully, I don't work in mid-town anymore so I don't have to deal with "visitor" upsets. Lordy, the amount of cops they use here is insane. Even before 9/11.

Let us know if you find out where he ate! Colorado looks very inviting for dining. I would love to endulge there  :)

Jill Biden rocks?  The attention she is trying to attract to education and especially community colleges is extremely important.
