Off to Aspen, OpenThread

I'm off to Aspen for the 2009 NORML Legal Seminar (that's me giving my talk in 2006.) Sad to say, not too much has changed since then, but at least some changes to our country's draconian drug laws are in the works. My topic this year: "High Hopes and Modest Expectations: Drug Law Reform under President Obama and a Democratic Congress." [More...]

The full agenda for this year is here.

Big Tent Democrat and TChris will be around through the weekend, and I will likely stop by from time to time, but I'm looking forward to a break from the news. Plus, the TL Kid is coming too -- his first time as a lawyer. I'm pretty sure we are the NORML Legal Committee's first mother-son team.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

A new survey suggests a decrease in binge drinking and an increase in herb useage in Colorado.

Coloradans say they are doing less hard drinking than they did in the past few years but say they are more likely to smoke pot, according to a two-year federal assessment to be released today.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found Colorado was the only state to log a decrease in those who think they are at risk to binge-drink since the last study completed in 2006, from 29.8 percent in the previous study to 25.8 percent in the most recent.

Meanwhile, Colorado is one of seven states that notched "significant" increases in teens and adults who say they are more likely to smoke pot at least once a month than those who participated in the last government survey.

The face of American Judaism has been changing over the past 30 years through intermarriage and the resulting births, interracial adoption and conversion. Stanton's ordination is a significant benchmark in this evolution, said Paul Golin of the New York-based Jewish Outreach Institute.

And finally, it was twenty years ago that a group of shipworkers in Gdansk pushed back against their Soviet oppressors and changed the World.

Poland took time to bask in historical pride on June 4 when the country
celebrated the 20th-anniversary of the historic first free elections in the communist bloc.  Coming after the famed Round Table negotiations between Poland's then communist government and the Lech Walesa led opposition, the June 4 elections heralded the end of 40 years of communist rule, and helped trigger a wave of revolutions in Central Europe that shattered the Iron Curtain.

this morning at Buchenwald?  He was so moving--particularly his words about how we haven't yet learned the lessons of WWII with situations that have occured since in Congo, Bosnia, Darfur, etc. and all the on-going wars and conflicts including Iraq.

Here's a quote to frame on your wall:

"The Arab-Israeli conflict should no longer be used to distract the people of Arab nations from other problems."

    Good advice.

    Just ignore it, folks.

And while they're at it, they should not be distracted by what we are doing in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Those pesky civilians are every-damn-where. For heaven's sake. What do they expect from a drone - brains?

They should focus on important issues - like headscarfs - and let us go about our business.

drug law reform from either obama or the dems in congress. drugs are politics' "fourth rail", any attempt to bring sanity into the discussion almost certainly means political death.

we'll apparently happily spend ourselves into fiscal destitution, to wage war and jail people, all so we can feel "safe".
