Monday Night TV Thread: Jay Leno's Back

Jay Leno comes to primetime tonight -- and every weekday night, at 10 pm ET, 9 pm MT. The showpage is here. You can watch backstage setting up on the live webcam now.

The show is said to be different than the Tonight Show in that it will focus more on comedy.

Music tonight will be by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West. Kanye will also do his big mea culpa for his obnoxious behavior to Taylor Swift last night during the MTV Awards.

Tonight's big guest: Jerry Seinfeld. Tomorrow, Tom Cruise, Wedsnesday will be Robin Williams and Miley Cyrus, and Thursday, Halle Berry and for music, Eric Clapton and Bruce Hornsby.

Break a leg, Jay. This is an open thread for all TV stuff. Updates below:

The monologue was unimpressive. The Cheaters episode was different and ok as a change of pace. The first funny thing was the car wash, I loved it and think the guy Dan is really talented.

Were the network censors asleep at the switch a bit, or have they relaxed their prime-time standards? It was a little more R-rated than I expected, both in language and demonstration (the car guys with the hoses was one example.)

Seinfeld is on now.

Update: Seinfeld (and Oprah) seemed a little awkward, not too funny or interesting. But the Jay Leno - Obama faux interview was absolutely hysterical. Well done, Jay. If you missed the show, catch it on You Tube or tomorrow on the show's website. Getting Obama to recommend buying marijuana in dime bags was just one funny part.

Kanye, Jay Z and up next. At least they're not showing Jay Z arriving at LAX and making us follow along for the ride. (like last night on MTV.) I'd love it if they brought Taylor out as a suprise, but I think the show is too scripted and pre-planned for that.

Update: I didn't it would be possible but I actually felt sorry for Kanye. The musical number was pretty good, particularly Rhianna. It also seems like the show's sound stage and equipment are much better than at the old show.

That'a a tv wrap from me until tomorrow night's live finale of Big Brother. Go Jordan!

Here's the segment with Jay and Kanye tonight (unfortunately with a 25 second commercial at the beginning.)

Sharing my insurance nightmares with the purpose of helping people in Washington state who might be in the same boat.

My insurance premiums soared through the roof, so I recently switched to a $3000 deductible plan.  Reading more, and asking BOTH the insurance company and the insurance commissioner's office, I determined that the $3000 deductible plan is considered catastrophic in WA state, and thus is not "creditable" for the purpose of waiving pre-existing condition clauses if I were to need to change coverage.  Panic stricken, I went through a huge rigamorole to switch to a $1000 deductible plan that would be creditable.  Finally today, the insurance company said they switched me to the $1000 deductible plan.  Phew, relaxed.

My DH and I were discussing the HIPAA tonight (and BTW, HIPAA was enacted on Bill Clinton's watch) and I looked something up which triggered a new panic and the reality that I'd wasted my money changing to the $1000 deductible plan.

The bottom line and if anyone in WA State wonders about this: When switching from an individual plan to a group plan, the HIPAA applies. The HIPAA is quite liberal -- ANY health insurance, including catastrophic coverage (but with the exception of things like accident riders on an auto insurance plan, and other half-hineyed insurance coverage) is considered creditable for the purpose of determining if  pre-existing conditions clauses can be waived.  It is only when changing between plans which are both on the individual market that catastrophic plans (defined in Washington as having deductible of $1750 or more) aren't considering creditable.  Of course, for me it's moot.  I can't switch to another provider.  I have 3 seemingly small conditions that result in my flunking the health questionaire so if I were to want to change plans, the new plan would like refuse me.  So, I just paid a bunch of money for retroactive coverage on the $1000 deduct plan when it makes more financial sense to stay with the $3000 plan....sigh.

    Gawl I hate insurance.

Can you put this on an insurance or open thread? (none / 0) (#21)

not the most encouraging way to start the season but a win is a win and I guess it will take a minute for them to get used to each other.  This is a very different Pats team.  Brady definitely looked nervous in the beginning but I think he'll get over it.

although I didn't think our defense was that great the year we went 18-1 either.  They don't have to be when you put up 50 points a game and your offense always has the ball.

That being said, they are clearly also not used to each other yet.

I think we were super rusty.  But when it comes down to it, Brady is where he wants to be, where he should be.  And he's still got the intangible quality of being able to pull it off when it counts.  They just gotta get used to each other.  And you know Belicheck is gonna have plenty to work with this week.

Oh and the kick returner also scored two touchdowns in 2 min.

...The Bills lost due to sheer stupidity (down the ball in the End Zone!!!11!) while the Bungles lost because of plain old bad luck.

At least the Bills/Pats game was exciting all the way through--the Broncos/Bengals game was a snoozefest for 59 and a half minutes.

did a Bengals defender hit the ball last or a Broncos receiver before it fell in Stokely's lap?  If the former, its not all bad luck...defensive backfield 101 says "knock it down!"

And where are the safeties?  No receiver should be behind anybody in that situation.

Worse than not taking the touchback...just fall down at first contact!

I love Kanye West.  I realize this won't be the most popular post, and he's kind of an @ss.  That being said, he never holds back, which can get him in trouble, but he's clearly an emotional guy, and that makes his music pretty fantastic a lot of the time.  Not every song he does is great, but there are some incredibly poignant and moving ones in the bunch.  And he made it ok for rappers to sing about something real and still get played on the radio.

And for whoever wrote that the other day, the one thing he most certainly is not, is a "gangster" in his music, or otherwise.

Not a Jay fan, but Robin Williams could make me watch :)

I'm looking forward to some of the new shows and the returning. DWTS could be fun as this year's football player looks to have some spunk. A few new dramas have peeked my interest. Fall TV is looking good, have my reality shows (TC, DWTS), sports (Yankees going into post and the Jets/football in general), and some possible good new dramas along with the ones I already watch. Plenty to keep me company while I work {grin}. I'll be spending more day hours in the kitchen and at the park with the Dot ;)
