Local News Station Pulls Republican "Whopper" Ad

9News, Denver's local NBC affiliate, has pulled an ad against Congressman Ed Perlmutter for being "a whopper." The ad was placed by "American Action Network, an outside group founded by GOP operatives."

The ad suggests that because U.S. Rep. Perlmutter voted for health care reform, he supported convicted rapists' access to Viagra.

The Denver Post and 7News also called the ad false and "fiction."

Convicts out of prison are allowed by law to purchase any health care plan they choose. Some of those plans cover Viagra prescriptions, and some don't. There are no provisions to either prohibit or protect the prescription of erectile dysfunction drugs for qualified health plans in the Act.

More good news: After 9 News yanked the ad, the group canceled all its ads with the network. [More...]

Who runs American Action Network? Frederic Malek.

Based on his biography, he was campaign manager for President George Bush in 1992, and served as national finance chairman for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign in 2008.

The group promotes itself as being "center-right."

Yoi! Thanks for identifying the ad's underlying sponsor. Ah...Malek. Early on in my federal govt career, that name surfaced in connection with manipulative and politicization plans re: hiring in the federal government. He was closely associated with governmental purges & hit list mechanisms. Ah...Malek. Lurking in the shadows as ever. C. Matthews' use of the word "Hardball" could only have been derived from the modern inventor, Malek. My first acquaintance with the right's non-ideological steel hatchet-man was from whispers about his background by knowledgeable civil servants in the '70s.

Seriously, Malek could have served as the role model for Rove. IMO, tho, Rove hasn't attained those depths because he seeks the limelight too much. Pay attention to the shadows...and Malek. (Even when it isn't Halloween.)

BTW, the "viagra ad" did more than suggest: The ad was a daisy chain kind of statement from one young woman on the phone to another asking directly "Did you know that Congressman Perlmutter voted for <insert falsehood?>

...we do have a Fox affiliate--and they were the ones who pulled the first ad this cycle.

From Betsy Markey's campaign:

KDVR Fox 31 today became the first television network in the United States to refuse to air a candidate's campaign commercial because the ad is patently false.
Representative Cory Gardner's latest attack ad criticizes Colorado's Betsy Markey for a vote taken by U.S. Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts.
"We applaud Fox 31 for standing up to Rep. Gardner's bald-faced lies," said Markey (Betsy)'s campaign spokesman Ben Marter. "The people of Colorado are seeing a lot of awful negative campaign commercials this year, but through all the misleading clutter, Fox 31 decided that Rep. Gardner's latest lies are too egregious to broadcast. Rep. Gardner should be ashamed of himself and should apologize to the people of the Fourth Congressional District for lying to them."
