Mexican Court Overturns Caro-Quintero's Release

Did politics and the DEA get to the Mexico Supreme Court? The Court has overturned the August order of an appeals court releasing Rafael Caro-Quintero (background here.) Caro-Quintero served 28 years before an appeals court reversed his conviction, finding the federal court in Mexico lacked jurisdiction because since DEA Agent Camerena was not a consulate official or diplomat, Caro-Quintero should have been tried in state court.

After a meeting in Washington in September, Mexican Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam promised that authorities in his country would reapprehend Caro Quintero.

The U.S. is now offering a $5 million reward for Caro-Quintero's arrest. His whereabouts are unknown.

Mexico makes American corruption look quaint (none / 0) (#1)

Although ours comes with more heft internationally and is, therefore, worse for the world. But for Mexicans who aren't wealthy, good luck. My last image of Baja was cruising down to Gaviotas for the night, headed for La Bufadora the following day, when I see an incomplete high rise condo on the beach (unfinished like so many buildings on the coast in northern Baja), and right next to this shiny highrise paradise palace that never quite got there, I see a sickly skinny donkey tied to a pole next to a dilapidated shack, and out of that shack ambles an old man who might have been the only creature on earth more sickly skinny than that donkey.

me for a match. I could see right away he was out of the ordinary. He said are you lookin' for somethin' easy to catch?.." Dylan.

I had just got into Brownsville and gone into a cafe for a cup of coffee. Ten or fifteen minutes after I'd been in the joint, a young Mexican guy with a disconcerting thousand-yard-stare walked up to my table and asked me if I wanted to make a really fast few hundred bucks bringing something across the border. What popped into my head next was an image: of me in an irrigation ditch with my throat slit. I smiled and said no, thank you.

...used to be a great place to party, right in between Matamoros and Padre.  We used to make the trip at least once a month and occasionally going deep into the city and the huge market.

Last time I went it was like coming through the airport, Matamoros was different, the pharmacies said 'no' and the tone was bleak, plus no way I was going to venture beyond Garcia's with all the rumors of violence.

The drug war and tightened border security killed their economy.

Caro-Quintero did a lot of business with most of the California chapters of the Hells Angels.  They didn't like the apostrophe in their name.  In the early 70's I edited ski movies, from the previous winter, in San Francisco.  The SF chapter of the HA wanted a movie made of their lives.  There were 27 of them and they were trying to upgrade their image.  We filmed them giving away free food in Golden Gate Park and guarding all the music venues around SF including Janice, Jimmie, the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Steve Miller and lots more.  I knew the Angels and got backstage all the time and met all those musicians.  Pretty exciting stuff.  We also filmed the Angels on runs in big groups and individually at their houses.  Many lived with their mothers.  We were not allowed to film any of their stash houses with pot that came from the mysterious Caro-Quintero.

and yes sj I actually was a cameraman for the Maysles brothers at Altamont.  Fortunately I knew the Hells Angels and they got me out of there when it all hit the fan, literally with the pool cue.  That Hells Angel was from the Oakland chapter and was quite crazy.  He had been in the SF chapter but transferred to Oakland since he didn't want to be in any movies which became ironic as he was front and center in that film.

1/2 a margarita that I couldn't keep my eyes from rolling back inside my head (in contrast to my wife who was totally fine and already into her 2nd margie), I went outside, got sick all over the parking lot, and then locked myself in my car.

I pretended to be passed out when the friendly local knocked on the window and told me to unlock the doors so he could help me.

About an hour later I woke up and felt completely, 100% fine. Went back inside and had dinner with my wife, who was on margie #4 or somthing.

It wasn't until a few days later that I put it all together.

to the Mexican AG should be reassigned from the drug rackets to the finance rackets stat...cuz that motherf*cker gets things done!

With only 300 million or so in foreign aid to Mexico to work with and he accomplished this, imagine what he could do for us with the trillions in domestic aid given to the banksters.
