Detainee 940, Adel Hamad, a husband, father, aid worker and teacher, is from Sudan. Here's his story, told by his public defender's investigator and others.

    This man was a HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR and a ping-pong player....why on earth would be need to have someone like this locked up?  He should be home with his family.  His detention is TRULY UNCONSCIONABLE!!

    As compelling as the video about Adel Hamad is, what I found even more interesting was the NYT article that was linked to in the post.  

    Please see the video.  It will touch your heart.  Then please read the article.  It describes a system that is broken with many specific examples, including Adel Hamad.  What happens when you set up a system without any "judicial standard of fairness" is that you end up with a system without any rhyme or reason as to why some people are released and others continue to be imprisoned.

    One thing that occurred to me after reading the article is that there is an opportunity cost in imprisoning large numbers of innocent individuals for a long period of time.  In addition to damaging our country's reputation, decreasing the willingness of other people and countries to cooperate with us, the resources that we spend on imprisoning and interrogating large numbers of innocent people are resources that were not available to go after those who were not innocent.

    ... but rather by the defender's professional investigator.  The Federal Public Defender Office in Portland, Oregon, is just terrific, by the way.  They were also co-counsel for Brandon Mayfield, the Portland attorney (an American-born convert to Islam), who was falsely accused in the Madrid train bombing based on a mis-identified fingerprint. Great video production, very compelling.
