The Sad Story of Hamid Sayadi

The San Francisco Chronicle today features the sad story of Kurdish-American auto mechanic Hamid Sayadi. It's an example of what happens when reason gets left behind in our post-9/11 world.

A witty and eloquent Kurdish-American in his 50s, Sayadi waved the flag of his adopted country and cheered its military for three decades — all to end up stripped to his underwear one day, in the boiler room of his workplace, he says, a ragged and sobbing husk of his former self.

The workplace was New United Motor Manufacturing, called NUMMI. It's the largest auto manufacturer in Fremont, Calif, building both GM and Toyota vehicles.

He was a passionate supporter of the US military when it invaded Iraq -- but to his co-workers at the plant, he says, he was just "Ali Baba" and a potential terrorist. The harassment got worse and worse until one day he snapped.

He's now suing NUMMI, Toyota and GM for $40 million.

"It's a $40 million message to NUMMI that they cannot mistreat, humiliate, degrade, harass, discriminate and retaliate against and fail to protect the very people that make NUMMI what it is today," [San Francisco employment attorney Kelly ]Armstrong says. "It's a message that Mr. Sayadi deserves justice."

The details of what Sayadi says he endured are shameful. But not surprising, given an Administration that has relentlessly drummed the fear of terrorism into the heart of every American.

Time to say enough. Good luck to Mr. Sayadi.

Yes, as you mostly point out, racism was the only motive in the attacks on Sayadi. Not sure why you wanted to generalize it as

Some idiots have been making fun of a guy, so the guy sues to company.  Sounds like amerikkka

    There is none.

You have to remember that Edger attacks everyone who disagrees with him as, racists, bigots, idiots, stupid, etc. If you persist in disagreeing it will become worse and worse. He will almost go into spasms.

I have come to believe he does this because he has a huge inferiority complex and the only way he can make himself feel good is to attack others.

Worse, he has this God complex that only he understands Iraq, and that all the Iraqis are busy attacking US military. He completely ignores the complexity of the situation, and will not admit that a huge number of Iraqis are killing other Iraqis in an attempt to control and subdue them.

    From a currency trader friend:

My focus is on global markets and currencies (with side orders of petroleum and commodities). Meanwhile, the world's focus is on deliberately kicking America's ass (even if it hurts them in the short term). Many nations are willing to take a hard economic hit to rid the world of a dangerous invading nation with an insane leader threatening to "throw atomic bombs" at his make-believe enemies. As a result, experienced U.S. investors have been dumping their US dollars (frantically over the past ten days)

Investors of all ages and experience levels are now in uncharted water as the market starts its second big wave down. This bear market has already exceeded the length of the 1929 bear market which now appears very short compared to Japan's current 14 year decline. A small number of stock funds still show a positive record over the past 4 years along with bond funds which, until recently, were benefiting from very low interest rates. It will become increasingly difficult for any of the conventional long stock funds to show consistent gains in the expected future environment.

Although Wall Street and the general public are still bullish, their attitude will certainly change as the decline now underway picks up speed. All investors, desiring to continue growth of their assets, should think seriously of starting at least a very small trial venture on the short side of the market. I made that decision about 5 years ago and now consider that long and short funds are equally important in my current investing.

Pull your head out and look around. It'll be faster.

SINGAPORE: Japan, China and Taiwan sold U.S. Treasuries at the fastest pace in at least five years in August as losses linked to U.S. subprime mortgages sparked a slump in the dollar.

Japan cut its holdings by 4 percent to $586 billion, the most since a new benchmark for the data was created in March 2000, U.S. Treasury Department figures published Tuesday showed. Chinese ownership of U.S. government bonds fell by 2.2 percent to $400 billion, the fastest pace since April 2002. Taiwan's slid 8.9 percent to $52 billion, the most since October 2000.

The Asian dumping of Treasuries exacerbated the biggest sell-off in U.S. financial assets since Russia defaulted in 1998.

As I look what you have said, it pains me to think how much we have made your people suffer. We get to sit back in our luxury, reading about horrors on the internet, while you get to experience it daily. The statements of "we fight them over there, so we don't have to fight them over here" are truly horrid, because of course your people deserve to suffer daily attacks while I get to sit on my lazy ass. What makes us so special that other people should do the dying for us?

The greatest crime of all though, is that we know what is going on, but we really don't care. It isn't that we don't know what is going on in your country, but the fact that we are so focused on our i-Pods and DVD players, that we simply don't care that your people die every day. All they are to us is statistics on the news. We lament loosing a single American soldier, and ignore the hundreds that day each day. All people have equal value, and the nation that touts itself as the land of equality has forgotten that.

I desperately want to say something that creates peace, but there can never be anything I can say that will do that. As long as I sit in the lap of luxury while another your people live in squalor, there can be nothing that creates peace.

"Making fun of" is a description of what they were doing.

What it refers to is the fact that they were taunting him and enjoying it. "Making fun of."

Making fun was what they were doing?  Must be an old southern phrase heard when they were making fun around the lynching tree.

    Your dishonesty is astounding.

Dispute that "making fun of" is standard english. The point is that when someone is getting lynched because they have darker skin than the the lynchers, calling it "making fun of" is a typical way of minimizing the event. IOW the person getting "made fun of" is below human and killing him is like shooting fish in a barrel for fun.

Is your obtuseness stemming from your deep seated fear of immigrants especially Muslims? Don't you see this as having to do with the fact that the abusers were harassing him because he was from Iraq and had dark skin? Do you not see this as having nothing to do with anything other than racist stereotyping?

I use a pejorative to describe the actions, and this doesn't suit you? To heck with you.

Your continual attacks and usual BS has placed you in the category of "who cares what jondee thinks?" Nothing suits you. You whine continually and deliberately misunderstand.

And worse, you are losing your entertainment value.

Get a new act. This one is wore out.

    Right, whatever you say.

I could be prejudiced against green beens and neither a racist or bigot.

Sounds just like something a bigot would say.

have the patience of job when it comes to your and Jondee's BS, but I don't.

You claim to misunderstand plain English using everyday descriptive terms, call everyone who disagrees with you a racist while you evidently won't even accept the dictionary meaning, etc.

    Your game is exposed.

And if anyone really thinks that any monetary settlement will fix him after what was done to him, think again.

He wasn't "being made fun of". He was systematically destroyed by hateful words and actions. I am disgusted that some seem to think that 'is all it was'.

This bullying/harassment/bigotry type of behavior is not to be tolerated. And for the company to ignore his complaints, even worse, humiliate him for daring to complain is disgusting.

We (the collective United States we) did this to German Americans during WW1 and 2, but they could change their names from Mueller to Miller and 'blend'. We did this to Japanese Americans, but they coudn't blend, so they were put in interment camps.

    Enough.
