From Supermax to Sudan: 1973 Terrorist Leaves Prison

Last week, Palestinean refugee and Black September terrorist Khalid Al-Jawary, 63, finished serving 15 years of his 30 year sentence for placing three bombs in New York City in 1973 and left Supermax in Florence, Colorado for Kartoum, Sudan.

Al-Jawary ended up in Sudan after Algeria initially agreed to accept him but then reversed course, setting off an intense scramble to find a country that would take him. It's unclear why Algeria ultimately decided against taking Al-Jawary.

Al-Jawary wanted to be deported to Jordan, where his family lives, but the country apparently would not allow him. Federal officials said he had dual citizenship with Jordan and Iraq.

More on his crime:

His deportation came 36 years to the day that he placed bombs in two cars on Fifth Avenue and a third at JFK Airport timed to coincide with the arrival of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. He was convicted in 1993 of planting the bombs, which failed to detonate.

....In a sworn statement to immigration officials in 2000, Al-Jawary admitted he belonged to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which routed Fatah in a takeover of Gaza in June 2007.

He never talked:

A hardened terrorist, he never cracked in prison and refused to give up information that might have shortened his time behind bars.

Sudan previously has served as a host country to Osama bin Laden and Carlos the Jackal and is believed have a "long relationship: with the PLO.

Bin Laden moved to Sudan in the early 1990s and began building his al-Qaida infrastructure that included a mix of business and terrorist enterprises. Bin Laden was expelled in 1996 under pressure from the U.S. and moved his operations to Afghanistan.

I wonder how he will be treated in Sudan:

Black September terrorists stormed the Saudi Embassy in Khartoum just days before Al-Jawary's bombs were supposed to detonate in New York City. The attack left three diplomats dead.

More on Black September:

The PLO-controlled Black September was also responsible for the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre in which 11 Israeli athletes were murdered.

Why is Al-Jawary being released early? Did he earn that much "good time credit", or what?

    Who's on first I don't know is on second (none / 0) (#2)

Perhaps letting this guy loose is only something done to follow or tail this guy to see who he may attract or go to. Rather than just deteriorate in jail at least use some of his life to an end to perhaps solve some questions.

Only the CIA knows and from my view the CIA has been politically corrupted for decades, hopefully now they do something good. This stuff of assassinating leaders America does not want has come home to roost.

But one thing is for sure our society has been in denial especially supported by the major networks and social scientist, teaching and politicians, through the decades with hypocritical policies.

Our policies in Iraq and Iran are shameful through the last half of the century through the decades are horrendous and likely for the Islamic extremist very justified for any of our destruction.  America's own system of justice is nothing more than power and money.

Which in not good basics in capitalism. Actually our corruption has been in our economy, and political structure, and those we view in contemporary television have brought us top this point. The cable wonks are a serious deterioration of the public success.

The execution of Saddam Hussein in 2006 is sometimes compared to Tyrannicide. Or as from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, America is possibly engaged in torture murder.

But yet there are those who can not accept the ideal that it all, the pre-emption war in Iraq, was a bad, bad, decision. Of course this leads to the destruction of the powerful Bush-Cheney political family if any fact finding was developed to conclude the huge harm or violations endured during the Bush administration. More likely it would destroy the Republican Party reason also enough for anyone to deny being its leader or a part of it.

The core reason for the Limbaugh flap as leader of the party. You better bet Limbaugh does not like to loose. But a fact finding commission might wind up as a story that I watched on Boston Legal. This very gay old man hit his mother over the head to kill her. To make the story short the very brilliant lawyer got this old guy off the charge of homicide murder. Then after being found not guilty the old man goes off again to do the same and murder at will again all after promising not to ever do that. But again promising this is the last time.

Ladies and Gentlemen of America this might very well be where we are in political justice. Be a good boy and get a second chance after murder? Sell Cannabis and you find yourself in jail for a long time. Sheesh.

I don't get it either.  Why the early release?  63 is still young enough to be a terrorist and even old information might have been useful.  His intent was mass murder, and fifteen years is hardly LWOP.

Sell Cannabis and you find yourself in jail for a long time. Sheesh.

and you find yourself penning inane screeds on innocent legal blogs. whew!

it's no surprise they had some difficulty finding a country willing to accept him. the guy's a loose cannon, liable to explode if he decides he doesn't like something about his host country.

don't let his age fool you. he may be physically unable to commit acts of violence, but he's able to convince youngsters to. that makes him more dangerous than just your ordinary thug.

as for letting him out early, to tail him and see who or what comes floating by; it'd be nice if i thought any of our intelligence agencies were that smart or capable. maybe contract it out to mossad.

    I rather suspect Mossad (none / 0) (#5)

will be doing that without our invitation.  Wouldn't be surprised if he met with an "accident" not long down the road, either.

that will be a righteous murder.  The cycle continues...

I guess it is too much to ask that we are willing to error on the side of liberty and redemption and freedom.

Maybe the US isn't as worried about Left Wing attacks from the PLO as much anymore?
