    to get home. I've got her Manhattan made and chilled, a Buster Keaton film in the projector (Cops), a bowl and popcorn and a dish of M&Ms.

    either planned or envisioned. But I was quite surprised at Izetan Dept. Store in the Kyoto Station to see mobs of youngish Japanese women vieing to buy chocolate.

    ... and not just a narrow sliver of it.

    You know, show your heart, indulge your passion, hug a fellow creature, be good to yourself if flying solo. Whatever the circumstance, use this day to show everyone you love that you love them.

    If love is anything, it's heroic. It takes guts to wear your heart on your sleeve and take the hits that come with that, so I love having a day set aside where everyone can be a s/hero ... just for one day.

    Besides, it's just too damn cold to have a proper Lupercalian orgy. Brrrr.

    ... based on their achieving a ludicrous plastic model combining physical "perfection", obscene wealth and a worshipful following (OR a willingness to pursue that at any cost.)

    I'm tired of seeing brilliant, lovely people side-tracked into anguish, so if I haven't said so by V-Day, I make sure they know they're special to me.

    There's no one here but two cats and a stray nephew to protect me from the psycho Christopher Walken sound-alike who invariably calls whenever Husb's away on V-Day.

    Presumably that creepy letch will want to know how every poor creature in this creaky spooky house is enjoying the goody basket that came yesterday.

    I'm keeping up a brave front and choking down the micro-tin of caviar so the other critters don't panic. (Also using my sternest Atticus Finch voice to explain to the cats that if this tin was meant for them, it would have a GD picture of a cat on it. Sheesh.)

    Nerval, the French poet, couldnt keep a cat, so he risked being brought up on charges for thievery (which he was), in order to rescue his pet lobster "little Thibault" from a fisherman's net. He used to take him for walks tethered to a satin ribbon.

    Some would say this "madness" was meant to repel others. I say the poet cant always wait for others. If they come, they come..

    I have to say, the image of walking a lobster around on a satin ribbon is as good an example of heroic love as I've ever heard.

    Husband and I went to see a performance that included our much beloved younger daughter.

    What a hoot, can't remember when we laughed so much or felt so hopeful as parents.
