and Guinness, since as its slogan says, "Guinness Is a Meal in Itself."

But there will be cottage fries with curry gravy, corned beef, soda bread, and more fine foods (as well as, at the site that hosts ethnic festivals every weekend, an array of delicacies from other groups . . . if with a nod to the Irish with the renaming of a dessert stand as the improbable "Mother Machree's Strudel House."  Ah, cross-culturalism at its weirdest.)

And yes, I have been to the St. Paddy's Day parade in NYC, and it was fun, once.  But this fest is a weekend long, every year, and a must -- mainly for the music and dance, many from the Irish diaspora here and in eastern Canada . . . but mainly the best and the biggest from Eire itself.  And on many stages at once. from the Gathering tonight to the Scattering on Sunday night.

The Scattering is a favorite, the farewell ceili, when we bang the bodhrans from the four corners of the fest grounds to come together at the mainstage, where all of the performers jam.  Of course, it's also fun to know which pubs they prefer after the fest every night, when they jam there as well.

But the Scattering is the last chance for a year for most of these marvelous (and many famous)  Irish performers to jam.  They're on the road most of the year, each on their own schedules, so this is the chance they get to get together -- here in the U.S., rather than on their lovely isle.  It always is a magic moment.

The real Irish cuisine can be exquisite.  Hie thee to a true Irisher pub here, such as some in my town, and you may be surprised.

And in lovely Eire itself, the cuisine can be incredible -- especially the fish, fresh-caught, mmmmm.  Of course, beware anything on the menu that actually is English, especially the English breakfast.  Those "black sausages" are the WORST.

the latest, this morning, from the local media -- which still can't figure out that it was Lost in Wisconsin all over the blogs who made it viral.

Btw, for those who blame the cashier, consider this comment to the story above.  Thank heavens that the cashier was not fired, nor the manager -- but customers were lost, because the CEO was another of those oh-so-special entitled folks:

I used to work at a Piggly Wiggly store in Sheboygan, where Piggly Wiggly was based. One day, the President of the Company came in and went in the express lane with a cart and 20 items. The checker who was new told him that it was for 10 items or less. He got mad and told her who he was. Less than 10 minutes later, the store manager was taking down the signs that hung from the ceiling saying "Express Lane 10 items or less" on orders of the president. After that the store had no express lane and people who stopped in for only a few items after work stopped coming in to shop.

by Cream City on Sat Aug 21, 2010 at 12:29:09 AM EST
was used for film scenes.  Cool in a way -- but I wonder if that has contributed to the sad degradation of the site?  A site designed as of worldwide importance, by the United Nations (and there are not that many!) really ought to be carefully preserved, and I cannot imagine that is first and foremost in the minds of movie makers.

We already have lost so much of Cahokia under big-box store parking lots . . . and so have lost so much we might have learned of a marvelous civilization, from what we do know -- one that lasted at least twice as long as our Euro-American society, little more than 500 years after Columbus.

I hope that I live long enough to read that more answers have been deduced from the site, such as any links to Mayan culture, as so many of the Cahokian artifacts sure look like others in the ruins in the Yucatan.  That debate continues. . . .

referring to the nearby rundown and crime-ridden city of E. St Louis being used for post-apoc film shoots, and not the mounds of Cahokia, which would indeed be inappropriate and destructive.  I suspect only light-footprint documentary film crews are occasionally allowed to shoot on the mounds.

Fascinating area though, Cahokia, and ancient America generally is largely still unknown to probably about 90% of our population.  Most folks just know there was something called the "mound culture" but probably couldn't tell you much beyond that.  It was barely, and badly, taught in the pretty good schools I attended, though with cable tv today, these ancient structures have gotten more pub.  Still lots for the academics to figure out about them, though it seems there was only renewed professional interest in the Cahokia area starting in the 1960s.

Treasury now pretty much admits 'extend and pretend' is a feature, not a bug.

    I concur:

The whole tone of this absolutely infuriates and disgusts me. "Hey, we gave the losers a chance, what do you want from us," is generally the attitude. Well, we want a foreclosure aid program that isn't set up like a predatory lending scheme, and that doesn't give all power to the banks to decide at their discretion whether to help people. And we want the money appropriated to the program to actually be used. And we want primary mortgages to be treated like everything else in bankruptcy. And we want something, just something, that isn't done entirely in service to the banks.

    BTD.  What is your prediction?

I think Brantley will be great.   The Gators will look a lot like the Chris Leak championship Gators with Brantly running the offense with much more precise and quick passing.

I think the Bammers get them in Tuscaloosa but the Gators get sweet revenge in Atlanta.

That makes them 12-1 and maybe in the national championship game.

    Your thoughts?

Dove World told it can't burn Qurans
Gainesville's fire chief says under the city's fire prevention ordinance, an open burning of books is not allowed.

The city of Gainesville has denied Dove World Outreach Center's (Dove World Outreach Center, dont you just love that? reach out and burn some books) application for a burn permit to set fire to copies of the Quran on Sept. 11, but the church says it plans to burn the holy books anyway.

Hmm, is it better to burn a flag (none / 0) (#51)

-- the Confederate flag -- as is planned near here by libruls, (nowhere near the South), on the day that the tea partiers hold their national convention (somewhere else).

I begin to weary of headline-grabbers on all sides, of all stripes.  Perhaps not a one of them is sufficiently literate to express themselves in some less fiery way, like writing a letter to the editor.

the MSM won't care that you've written a polite LTTE, however brilliantly crafted and reasoned.

On the Confed flag burning, I'm for it as a general matter.  Perhaps it can be incorporated with the group that's planning to counter-protest the Glenn Beck rally at the Lincoln Memorial.

    so
I ONLY have a cell because of the impediment to telemarketers.  so the credit card companies think they have found a way around this by using your number for their own stupid telemarketing scams.
I just finished ripping the "customer service" person a new one on this subject.
I had received about 5 or 6 TM call from capital one in the last week or so, so I call.
welllll he said, you will need to write a letter to blah blah blah
no, I said I know another way I can close the g*d damned account.  THAT will stop them will it not?

what do you know, I didnt have to write a letter to stop the calls.

    $%#&&*@(& credit card companies.

for some West Coast team to break through in the gridiron action.  Not likely though that we'll produce a nat'l champion this year.  Cal Bears okay but not great, Stanford maybe a little better, top-20 material, USC licking their wounds over the rules probation.

Boisé State might well again be the team I end up rooting for, being west of the Rockies (or actually in the Rockies, I forget).  After that, I'll root for any team outside of the Old Confederacy, including Ohio State (but maybe not quite yet Nebraska, Ben Nelson's bailiwick).  If we have to have yet another southern team as champion, let it be LSU.
