Jewish New Year and Open Thread

The Jewish high holy days begin at sundown (about now, Denver) with Rosh Hashanah. Temple Emanuel in Denver, like many other temples and synagogues, is streaming its service live. For many congregations, it is the first High Holy Day service inside the sanctuary since 2019 due to COVID-19.

At Temple Emanuel, a Reform congregation, you no longer need a prayerbook to follow along, although they are available. The words are up on the screen, in English (and Hebrew, and Hebrew-alliterative English). It is heavy on music -- there is a cantor, a guitarist, a pianist, a cello, a violin, and a choir. They play some prayers like a folk song, others to a modern beat, and still others alternating with the cantor's classical voice. This is not the service of your grandparents. It's much better. On a personal note, I am back from my trip to Istanbul. I was so suprised at how advanced Turk-iye is, in so many ways. The airport is immense, and so technologically advanced and geared towards passengers. The impeccably preserved (or rebuilt) architecture of the famous mosques and other legendary places blends seamlessly with the modern. There is an abundance of the freshest meat, produce and fruit as I've seen anywhere at the plentiful local markets (at least in Kadikoy on the Asian side where I stayed. Here's another of my favorite videos by Aladdin comparing the European and Asian sides). How incredible it feels to be so close to Sea of Mamara, the Black Sea and the Boshphorous Strait. How powerful and energizing the massive bridges are that connect the European and Asian sides and how fabulous they look all lit up at night. How well -developed and industrialized it is, there are huge modern factories for cars, appliances and everything else and great shopping streets like Bağdat Caddesithat goes on for miles. How safe I felt. And how well-maintained the infrastructure is.

Another beautiful place I spent a few days at was Yalova, across the sea from Istanbul. With its 360 degree view of the Sea of Mamara, and lush greenery, it was absolutely stunning, and reminded me of Switzerland. It had every kind of fruit and nut tree you can imagine, that went on for acres and acres, and even the occasional cow and huge turtle crossing the road. The mansion of the Royal family of Qatar was walking distance from the homes of ordinary citizens. A few times a day the Call to Prayer would be broadcast outdoors through the hills -- you couldn't see where it came from, but it stopped me in my tracks whatever I was doing, every time. It was beautiful and spiritual.

Turkey obviously has inflation problems from its falling Lira, and many economists disagree with President Erdogan's response of lowering interest rates instead of raising them. Economics and politics aside (and I heard about neither while I was there, from anyone), the Turkey I saw was one that invests in itself and its people and plans for the future. I absolutely loved Istanbul and and can't wait to go back.

One last thing: It was a relief to spend a week disconnected from the hatred, pettiness and political discord that has enveloped this country since Donald Trump slinked his way onto the national stage. I'm not letting him back into my consciousness. Everyone needs to just let him go. He's nothing but a grain of sand in the grand scheme of the universe. He brings darkness instead of light. He generates ridicule for our country instead of respect. He brings division instead of unity. It's on us, every one of us, to kick him out of our minds and turn the page when the media reports on him.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Turkey is a magnificent country. We met my mother and her friend there and toured with them for nine days, and I got to haul around the Turkish rug my spouse bought on the second day we were there.

I especially liked Istanbul. What a magnificent place. I read a few months ago that it is now the largest city in Europe by population.

Our next overseas trip will be to Ireland sometime next year. Right now, I'm in San Diego dealing with my uncle's estate. (I'm co-executor.) His funeral and burial are on Thursday, and I'm going back to Hawaii on Saturday morning. It'll be nice to be back home again.

    Aloha.

State Judges Make Rare Plea to Supreme Court
September 26, 2022 at 2:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 59 Comments

The Conference of Chief Justices, a group representing the top state judicial officers in the nation, filed a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court urging the court to reject "a legal theory pressed by Republicans that would give state legislatures extraordinary power," the New York Times reports.

"If the Supreme Court adopts the theory, it will radically reshape how federal elections are conducted by giving state lawmakers independent authority, not subject to review by state courts, to set election rules in conflict with state constitutions."

to the actual document, and it does not appear to be publicly posted yet at the Supreme Court's website. Did you come across one, perchance? If the NYT posted it, I don't have a subscription (I pay for WaPo and Phila Inquirer), so it's paywalled to me.

Referred one question to the D.C. Court of Appeals for an advisory ruling on D.C. employment law standards. The dissent by Judge Chin (saying Tr*mp is liable and not entitled to governmental immunity) kicks ass, though. It is priceless. Under the Dept of Justice argument, he points out, "no President could be held accountable for damage done in front of a microphone or in an official meeting -- whether defaming a citizen, exposing classified national security information, or inciting a riot. This is not, and should not be, the law." I wonder where he came up with those three examples?

Chris Kise, has been "sidelined" as Trump's attorney in the Mar-a-Lago stolen documents case.  It is reported that Kise, a former Florida Solicitor General and DeSantis transition team member, may be involved in some other way, in some other cases.  Maybe.

Kise was smart to  require the $3 million retainer up front, but dumb to think he had a normal client, although he did last almost a month.   CNN reporting suggests Trump is unhappy with the way the case is  going of late, especially after the grand start with Judge Cannon

. Perhaps, It was Kise who made the misjudgment of recommending  Judge  Dearie as SM, or it could just be falling out of favor owing to the souring of his relationship with DeSantis.  These two Floridians  are doing the typical  Republican internecine brawling, what with DeSantis claiming Trump is a moron and Trump calling DeSantis "fat".

    against maker of replica Batmobiles.
The criminal case against the only man licensed by DC Comics to build replica Batmobiles is ending. Mark Racop faced felony charges of "Obtaining Money by False Pretenses, and Diversion of Construction Funds".

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe told the I-Team, "I am announcing we are going to dismiss the case."

It seemed crazy to me that a California sheriff would send a team of investigators to Indiana to raid someone's business over a late delivery dispute.
Sheriff Carlos Bolanos admits he launched the investigation after one of his donors, Atherton realtor Sam Anagnostou, called to complain that his $210,000 Batmobile had been delayed. Bolanos sent a team of four investigators to raid the Batmobile garage in Logansport, Indiana.

In July, builder Mark Racop told the I-Team, "I was horrified. I've never gone through anything like this ever before in my life."

Racop claims Anagnostou was late with a payment and wasn't responding to requests, so he put his batmobile at the end of the line and starting working on someone else's. Seems like an abuse of power by this sheriff. Not sure why Indiana law enforcement allowed the raid.
